Language Variation and Change – Australia 5 (LVC-A 5)

Organised by:

Celeste Rodríguez Louro (UWA), Catherine Travis (ANU; CoEDL) and James Walker (La Trobe)

Language Variation and Change – Australia (LVC-A) is a biennial meeting of Australian researchers interested in the study of linguistic variability situated in its social context. This fifth iteration of LVC-A will be held as a satellite workshop of the annual meeting of the Australian Linguistic Society at La Trobe University on 6-7 December 2021 (with one day of overlap with the ALS meeting).

LVC-A will include a keynote address by Professor Rena Torres Cacoullos (Pennsylvania State University), editor of the variationist journal Language Variation and Change.

We welcome submissions from all languages and speech communities and invite work offering empirical quantitative analyses of linguistic structure, with interpretation contextualized in relation to (socio)linguistic theory. We particularly welcome papers exploring variation in lesser-studied languages.

Abstracts should comply with the format stipulated by ALS2021 and should be submitted by the ALS2021 deadline of 27 August 2021, through EasyChair. Please ensure that LVC-A5 is selected as the panel of your interest upon submission. The organisers will review abstracts and send notifications promptly. Abstracts not included for presentation in LVC-A5 will be forwarded to the ALS2021 conference organisers for evaluation and, if accepted, will be scheduled for presentation during the general conference sessions.
